There is a particular kind of friction that happens when you bring work across county lines and out into the desert. Curating Pieces of Us in Pahrump alongside my good friend Nick Giordano started as an ambitious idea about space, community, and dialogue, but it quickly became one of the most rewarding collaborative efforts I’ve been a part of.
The concept was straightforward yet layered: gather some of the most compelling, prominent artists from across the Las Vegas valley and beyond, and place their voices into conversation within a single room outside the standard gallery orbit. Pulling together a roster of that caliber comes with real logistical weight. Every artist arrived with a distinct language, wildly varied mediums, sharp perspectives, and rigorous studio practices that command attention on their own terms. The real curatorial challenge was building a coherent narrative that honored the grit, vulnerability, and inventiveness running through the regional scene.
Working through that process with Nick made the venture especially grounding. Curating with someone you trust transforms the problem-solving, balancing disparate visual weights, negotiating site-specific constraints, and pacing the room, into a real creative dialogue. We wanted the show to feel expansive, offering viewers in Pahrump direct access to the caliber of work shaping the wider Southwest while giving the artists a generous, intentional platform to test ideas together.
Standing in the space once the installation was complete was a rare moment of clarity. The dialogue between the individual pieces became a collective portrait of our creative ecosystem: restless, precise, deeply personal, and completely unapologetic. Collaborating with peers whose work I have watched, respected, and learned from was a privilege. Pieces of Us was less about a single overarching statement and more about proving that when we can pool our momentum and look past conventional borders, our creative community holds endless depth, and it's something we wanted everyone to see.
